Facts on Parrot
Parrots are members of a sub-family of birds known as psittacines, mainly comprised of afro tropical parrots. There are about 372 different parrot species in the world, most of them living in the tropics. Parrots weigh 1-4 kg and can be 100 cm long. Parrots are brightly colored and have curved beaks and strong toes. Two toes are usually positioned forward and the other two backward. This arrangement helps to ensure a firm grip on the branches.
What do parrots eat?
Just like most birds, parrots are omnivores, meaning they can eat both vegetation and meat. Parrots diet mostly contains flowers nuts seeds buts and insects. Parrots have strong jaws that enable them to snap shells open to eat what’s inside.
One amazing thing that parrots have been praised mostly for is their intelligence. They are able to imitate the human voice and even count. For example, the grey African parrot named Alex managed to count up to 6 and recognize 7 different colors and identify 35 different objects. Due to this amount of intelligence, it is believed that they are intelligent just like the five old human toddler.
Most parrots have a lifespan of about 10 years but when in captivity some parrots species have a lifespan of about 80 years. In the wild parrots live in large groups of that consist of 20 to 30 animals. They have nests in tree holes and termite mounds or even ground tunnels
One interesting thing about the parrots while breeding is that they are monogamous. While mating they usually match their mates.
The word parakeet literary means long tail. The natural plumage of the parakeet is yellow and green but due to captive breeding parakeets nowadays are available in more colors. Parakeets are members of a small sized to medium size species of the parrots. They generally have longer feathers than the parrots. Parakeets have a length of 18 cm with the largest having a length of 46 cm. their body mass ranges from 30 grams to 40 grams. Parakeets have a lifespan of about 5-20 years.
How can you tell a male from a female parakeet?
Differentiating between male and female parakeet is quite hard because they look similar. An easy way to know which parakeet is female and which is male is by the look of the bump of flesh above the beak of the parakeet. The bump of flesh is called Cere. The Cere of the male parakeet tends to be blue while that of the female parakeet is brownish in color.
Did you know that when it comes to parakeets spitting is a sign of love? Parakeets chew food and spit for the mother to feed its babies. Therefore when suddenly your parakeet spits to you suddenly, they are just communicating that “I love you, you are part of my family”

In the animal kingdom, family size matters a lot. In our case here, the parakeet seems to be quite disadvantaged because the parrot is way too larger and bigger in size than the parakeet. What has size to do with animals fights? A strong bird and in our case the parrot will easily injure the other with a scratch or a bite than what the other one would do to the parrot.
